Just-Eat’s mission is to make consumers’ and restaurants lives easier by enabling hungry surfers to “Order Takeaway. The Smart Way.” At the end of 2009 Just-Eat Group operates in 8 countries, has 8,000+ restaurants online and, every month, over 1.5m takeaway meals are bought through our sites.
The idea that led to Just-Eat came from Christian Frismodt, who while working for Coca-Cola Denmark in 1998 saw the opportunity to facilitate takeaway ordering via the internet. Shortly before the launch of the service on 1. August 2001 Just-Eat merged with another Danish company called FoodZoom which were pursuing a similar concept. In 2002 the original Just-Eat founders were bought out, and the FoodZoom team led by Jesper Buch took charge of the company.
In 2005 the SM Trust bought a majority share in Just-Eat and helped to drive international development.
Just-Eat.co.uk launched in the UK in March 2006 and has rapidly become the UK market leader, growing at an unprecedented rate.
In the autumn of 2007 Just-Eat partnered with the Dutch company Hapgids to form Just-Eat.nl.
In spring 2008, CEO and co-founder Jesper Buch decided that it was time for him to enter a new phase of his life, and he moved to Spain to work as an angel investor.
Launches in 2008 in Sweden and Ireland saw Just-Eat further expand its territories whilst the scale and potential of the UK market meant that in 2008 the Group HQ moved from Denmark to the new Just-Eat offices in London.
Klaus Nyengaard joined Just-Eat in summer 2008 as the new CEO responsible for taking the ambitions of Just-Eat to the next stage. This ambition led to a successful £10.5m fundraising in July 2009 led by Index Ventures and representing the largest investment ever in online takeaway.
2009 has seen further expansion within both new and existing territories. Just-Eat Belgium was launched in May 2009, Just-Eat Canada in August 2009 and Just-Eat Norway in November 2009, further cementing Just-Eat’s international leadership. In Sweden Just-Eat .se merged with two other online takeaway businesses to form a dominant player OnlinePizza AB.
Just-Eat is controlled by Index Ventures and the SM Trust with other investors including management, Venrex and a number of private individuals.
