The British Takeaway Awards, in association with Just Eat, returns for its fifth year to pay homage to the unsung heroes of the takeaway sector, and for the first time ever, a lucky takeaway lover could be in with the chance to be crowned a winner too, with the addition of a new category; ‘Britain’s #1 Takeaway Fan’.
For half a decade, Britons have voted en-masse for their favourite takeaways in The British Takeaway Awards. The five takeaways that receive the most votes in each of the twelve regions are invited to the star-studded awards ceremony at The Savoy, London on 27th January 2020 where the winning takeaway will be crowned Best Takeaway in Britain.
From now until the 20th of September customers across the UK can visit https://vote.thebtas.co.uk/ to vote for their favourite local takeaway and be in with the chance to win £1,000.
As well as voting for the best of the best in the sector, takeaway aficionados can also choose to nominate themselves as “Britain’s #1 Takeaway Fan”. Culinary Legend and one of the British Takeaway Awards judges Ainsley Harriott, will pick the lucky winner who will receive a holiday to the country where their favourite takeaway cuisine hails from, a free takeaway every month for a year (courtesy of Just Eat) and the “Britain’s #1 Takeaway Fan” trophy.
To mark the Awards’ fifth year, Just Eat commissioned a poll** to delve into Britain’s love of takeaways.
8 in 10 Brits say that takeaways bring them joyful moments, with six in ten ordering a takeaway to celebrate special occasions. Birthdays (36%) and romantic occasions such as anniversaries and Valentine’s Day (33%) polled the highest, 12% of us even favour a takeaway for Christmas dinner!
Takeaways were also shown to bring people together, with over half (56%) of Brits saying they get the most joy from sharing a takeaway with loved ones. True to tradition 15% of Brits order the same takeaway they used to enjoy with their family once a week (e.g. fish and chips on a Friday). Changes in technology are bringing new traditions too, almost half of Brits (47%) have snapped a photo of their takeaway or shared it on social media before tucking in and over a quarter of us (26%) admit to constantly checking the progress of our order on the app in anticipation.
Owner of Brunch (winner of The Best Takeaway in Britain 2018), Sharon Carline said:
“We were thrilled to win the best takeaway in Britain last year and we couldn’t have gotten there without the love and support of our customers. It’s an honour that people vote for us - so it’s great (and a bit of fun) to see ‘Britain’s #1 Takeaway Fan’ being added as a category this year so our customers can share in the joy too.”
Voting for the BTAs and nominations for the ‘Britain’s #1 Takeaway Fan’ category are now open until Friday 20th September.
