Just Eat reveals the favourite food trends in Ireland for the Easter weekend
- While other traditions prevail with Just Eat predicting an increase in demand for Fish & Chips on Good Friday!
- Easter Saturday recovery orders up 82% in 2018 as 50% of consumers still plan to BYOB to the party.
While last year saw Irish publicans celebrate a changing Good Friday culture, Just Eat has reported an increase in those choosing to uphold Easter tradition with demand for good ‘ol fish and chips up a massive 67% year on year! Ireland’s leading food ordering and delivery app is predicting a further order increase in 2019, as 50% of fans surveyed by Just Eat still plan to host the obligatory annual house party.
Unlike the main event at Christmas, the traditional Easter Sunday roast continues to lose momentum, with customers in Dublin and Cork City in particular, now more likely to feast on a Spice Bag than a roast lamb! Orders on Easter Sunday last year (2018) were up a staggering 72% in the capital, and over 67% in the rebel county, with Chinese the cuisine of choice for the seasonal family gathering!
Promising a 4-day weekend for most, 20% of customers on Good Friday will be stuck in the office but plan to order a Krispy Kreme sharer dozen. A further 30% will head to the local pub ‘for the novelty factor,’ which in 2018 also resulted in a shift in traditional ordering habits. Up 82% on the previous year, Easter Saturday took over from Easter Sunday as the most popular order day of the weekend, with Easter Monday also recording a significant uplift of 33%.
Commenting on the results of the Just Eat report, Edel Kinane, Commercial Director said:
“The popularity of the Spice Bag on Easter Sunday certainly disrupts the traditional idea of an Easter Sunday dinner, but it is reflective of a continuous shift in more relaxed ordering habits which we’re seeing among consumers using the Just Eat app across the week. Despite this shift on Easter Sunday, we can see that ‘fish’ on Good Friday is still the most ordered dish, so perhaps Irish people are still keen to hold on to certain traditions.”
